AI Engineer Intern

locationSan Francisco

About the role

We are looking for a AI Engineer Intern to join us this summer and help build the next generation of AI-powered data tooling at Hex.

Our mission is to empower users to understand and work with data using natural language and agentic AI capabilities. As an intern, youโ€™ll contribute directly to product and research that sits at the core of how data teams explore, analyze, and collaborate. While prior AI research experience is desired, weโ€™re also looking for curiosity, enthusiasm, and a willingness to dive into fast-evolving technology.

This is an opportunity to learn from experienced engineers, ship real features to production, and contribute meaningfully to one of the most exciting technical spaces of our time.

What you will do:

As an AI Engineer Intern, you will work across the entire research process, identifying problems, designing experiments, evaluating results, and implementing in production. Throughout this process, you will partner closely with other AI Engineers, software engineers, PMs, internal partners, and customers.

  • Build run real research experiments to solve business problems, making use of modern and classical AI/ML techniques, tackling problems such as post-training, continuous learning, and agent self-improvement

  • Collaborate with product engineers to deliver new AI-powered capabilities to end users

  • Contribute to research infrastructure including evals, production monitoring, training pipelines, and more

  • Solve practical engineering challenges, such as performance optimizations, data modeling, and API design

  • Participate in the full development lifecycle, from ideation and design to implementation, testing, and launch.

About you

  • You are pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, with plans to graduate in December 2027 or sometime in 2028

  • You have AI research, applied AI, or ML experience, ideally having worked on substantive generative AI or transformer-based projects

  • You have an interest in how you can build delightful product experiences backed by cutting edge technology, and an appetite for pushing the boundaries of what agents can accomplish

  • You care about users and enjoy thinking about how technical systems translate into polished, intuitive experiences.

  • You are curious, adaptable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift as new technology emerges.

  • You enjoy collaborating with others, asking questions, and learning from more senior engineers.

The compensation for this role is $11,000 a month + a housing stipend.
